Number of Credits to Enroll for Each Semester
- For pre-dissertators, full time enrollment minimums for fall and spring semester depend on appointment type. Pre-dissertators who are RAs, on a fellowship, or have a training grant appointment in a fall or spring semester need to register for at least 8 credits, and no more than 15 credits, that semester. Pre-dissertators who are on a TA-ship in a fall or spring semester need to register for at least 4 credits, and no more than 15 credits, that semester.
- Seminar (931 in fall and 932 in spring) is a required course for all of our students. Additionally, all students should register for research credits each semester. For first years, 999 counts as the research credits in the fall semester. After that, students must enroll in the 990 research course for their thesis advisor every semester (including summer, see below). Both 990 and 999 are variable credits (i.e. can be taken for 1-14 credits) and can be used to achieve minimum enrollment requirements.
- Pre-dissertators should remember that they need to achieve 32 total credits by the end of the summer semester of their second year.
- Summer enrollment is required for our students as you will be using university facilities including faculty/staff time your research. For pre-dissertators, the recommended summer enrollment is 2 credits of 990 as 2 credits is considered full-time in the summer for pre-dissertators. Pre-dissertators may take up to 12 credits in the summer, however, they should consult with the DGS about their plans to do so.
- For dissertators (regardless of appointment type), full time enrollment is 3 credits directly related to the thesis work in each semester. For fall and spring semesters this is 2 credits of 990 and 1 credit of seminar (931 in fall and 932 in spring). In the summer semester, this is 3 credits of 990.
- Students with any questions about enrollment should contact to the DGS.
For Key Registration deadlines, please see the Registrar’s website

II. Continuing Students
Students will be sent an invitation to enroll via e-mail from the Registrar’s Office two times during the school year. Pre-dissertator students should consult with their advisors about plans for completing all required coursework and whether they should consider taking additional electives. Additionally, although Pharmaceutical Sciences does not require students to have a minor, students may choose to complete a minor, or it may be required for certain training grants.
If a student needs permission to enroll in the correct section of 990, they should contact the GPM.
III. Dissertator Status
- To reach dissertator status according to the Graduate School, the following requirements must be met:
-
- All PSD course requirements completed
- 32 credits completed
- The Preliminary Exam passed and the warrant returned to the Graduate School
-
- Graduate School requirements state that students are required to maintain continuous enrollment until the completion of the doctoral degre
- Dissertators are required to enroll for three (3) graduate credits directly related to their dissertation research in each fall, spring and summer semester until graduation (audits do not satisfy this requirement). See above for details.
- Audits and pass/fail do not satisfy dissertator status requirements
- Additional courses taken as a dissertator will result in the removal of dissertator fee status
- Dissertator Frequently Asked Questions
IV. Auditing Courses
- Courses may be audited, thus students may register as an auditor
- If there is limited space in the class, fully registered students will be accepted into the class before a student is eligible to audit the class
- The student must be authorized by both the professor and the department in which the course is taught
- The student will then be eligible to register online as usual
- In order for the course to be audited, not graded: fill out the course change form and enter AU (audit) in the 5th column
- The instructor and the student must sign the course change form, and turn this into the Graduate School Office, 217 Bascom
- An audited class will appear on the transcript, but will not count toward the minimum credit requirement
- Contact the Graduate Program Manager with specific questions regarding registration or auditing courses
