President’s Corner

head shot of Naomi DoBuckle up for another semester of fun! Thank you for all your support. The past semester has been a successful semester for SCCP. Our mentorship program received tremendous feedback from both the students and the mentors. The SCCP fundraiser was very successful as well. Here are a couple highlights for this semester. In February, we are looking forward to another collaboration with the Interprofessional Health Council for the 2018 Preventative Care panel. There will be several panelists who came from a wide variety of backgrounds, including a social worker, dietician, pharmacist, and a genetic counselor to run through a patient case together. In March, we will have a cardiologist join us in our discussion of cardiology to answer any questions you might have about a career as a cardiology pharmacist. Our election is planned for April, and all current positions will be available for our general members. Lastly, in the month of May, we will be having a small get together with our mentors to celebrate the time you spent together this year. This will also be a chance for you to meet potential mentors for the following school year! The weather outside is cold, but our spirit is strong! Let’s bring on another successful semester together! Go Badgers! -Naomi Do

A Successful Fall Semester

It was a busy and productive fall semester for our SCCP chapter. In September we kicked off the school year with our first general meeting, during which we introduced new members to our organization. We detailed some our unique opportunities including competitions, national committee involvement, and our popular mentor program that matches pharmacy students with practicing clinical pharmacists. Welcome to new members!

Our October meeting featured a panel of interns representing fifteen different programs. A great variety of pharmacy practice setting were represented including community pharmacy, inpatient, ambulatory care, pediatrics, and managed care. This well-attended session was a great chance for DPH 2’s and DPH 1’s to ask questions and benefit from the experience of experienced pharmacy interns.

The theme for November was leadership, and our guest speaker, Dr. Dominic Porcaro from the Madison VA gave an excellent presentation to a combined audience of SCCP members and Phi Lambda Sigma Leadership Development Track participants. We appreciated his advice on developing leadership skills and enjoyed his real world experiences meeting the challenges caused by the recent drug shortages and other “difficult” situations.

With a successful Fall Semester behind us, we look forward to Spring!

SCCP Apparel Fundraiser for Cancer Research a Huge Hit!

In December, SCCP Executive Board Member Larissa Gabler spearheaded a successful apparel fundraiser. The quarter-zips, windbreakers, and thermoses bearing the School of Pharmacy logo were very popular items as students prepared to head home for the holidays. The fundraiser raised a significant amount of money will definitely be back next year. If you missed your chance to purchase, watch for more opportunities in the fall!

SCCP Members attend ACCP Annual Meeting

cactus in the desertSeveral SCCP members traveled to Phoenix Arizona for ACCP Annual Meeting held October 7-10. The conference was a great opportunity to network with leaders in the field of clinical pharmacy as well as other SCCP chapters from around the country and experience the educational programming available to clinical pharmacists. Highlights of the meeting were attending a student session on residency applications, sessions on opioids and pain management, and a keynote presentation on precision medicine. The winner of the 2017 Pharmacy Research Symposium, DPH 2 Maralena Taube, was on hand to present her poster on Effectiveness of sequential monotherapy followed by combination therapy versus combination therapy against clinical methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus isolates. Congratulations to Maralena!
