President’s Letter

I am very excited to serve as president of the Student College of Clinical Pharmacy- UW Madison  student chapter. This year, we will be focusing on the importance of research and research skills as future pharmacists. We are also very excited to introduce new meeting topics, including Pearls to taking Medication History along with tips from different interns from over 7 internship programs ranging from Wisconsin to Minnesota. The mentorship program will be continuing to grow this year with the help of pharmacists from all over Madison, from UW Health, VA, Meriter, St. Mary’s. We are hoping to see you at our meetings and excited to continue to grow with UW-Madison.

UW-Madison Team Competes in Round 3 of ACCP Clinical Research Challenge

Last January, three DPH 1 students, Lizeth Garcia-Jennings, Andrea Gray, and Musetta Steinbach competed in and won the local ACCP Clinical Research Challenge Qualifier, sending the trio to Round 1 of the national competition. They learned in March that they had passed on to Round 2, writing a  Letter of Intent for a novel Transitions of Care intervention. Their submission qualified for Round 3  which involved writing a full Research Proposal, along with 19 other schools. Although they did not place amongst the top 5, the competition was a rewarding experience. It was a unique opportunity to be able to work as a team to solve and think about pharmaceutical research as presented in a research paper summarizing a clinical trial. The team felt it was challenging and educational to think about the data presented and how it should be interpreted, and rewarding to learn the process of writing a research proposal. Musetta commented, “It was interesting to see all the work that is being done from the pharmacy side of things to improve patient outcomes and all the opportunities that exist for pharmacists to improve transitions of care.”

SCCP President appointed to ACCP National Committee

Our current President, Naomi Do, has recently been appointed to the national ACCP (American College of Clinical Pharmacy) Public and Professional Relations Committee. This is a great honor for Naomi and for SCCP in general to serve in such capacity. Naomi was one of the fifteen selected students across nation. Through this very selective process, Naomi will be able to represent our pharmacy school in the national organization. Congratulations Naomi!

Meet the Exec Board!

President: Naomi Do, DPH-3

head shot of Naomi DoAs president, I get to work alongside the executive committee to come up with plan and idea for SCCP. Together with the president-elect, we select and organize executive board and general member meetings throughout the semester. I facilitate executive board meetings and general member meetings as well as form agendas. I am also responsible for setting the general meeting schedule as well as finding exciting speakers to come present to us. In the near future, I am hoping to continue to develop and strengthen the Clinical Research Challenge from SCCP, both at the local and national level. During the 2017-2018 school year, I hope to get more involvement in our mentorship program as we have gotten much valuable feedback from last year. My personal goal for this organization is to foster a closer connection with the UW Hospital and Clinics’ pharmacy department as they are a very valuable resource to our students. In addition, I would like to continue to build a strong foundation for the organization for the year to come.

Fun Fact: Naomi graduated from a ballet institution at age 7.

President Elect: Andrew Osterbauer, DPH-2

headshot of Andy OsterbauerAs president-elect, I work to fill the roles and responsibilities of the president in his/her absence. This means that I facilitate executive board meetings and general member meetings as well as form agendas on occasion. I am also responsible for setting the general meeting schedule as well as finding speakers to come present to us. I also facilitate a lot of the communication that takes place between members of the executive board and work to make sure the events run smoothly. During the 2017-2018 school year, I hope to promote SCCP and help grow our membership. Being the main organization solely dedicated to clinical pharmacy, on a campus which is so connected to its hospital, really provides us an opportunity to develop our organization. This will allow SCCP to expand upon what we are able to do to help the community, better our students, and impact the pharmacy profession.
