Student and faculty expectations and progress are tied to the HSRP student review process and are key to the overall success. To ensure students are making adequate progress in the HSRP program, faculty and students will participate in evaluation exercises in Fall and Spring. At the end of Fall term, faculty will provide an informal overview of students and review any outstanding disciplinary actions. In Spring, students will complete the formal annual review process documents linked in the appendix (Annual Review), referring to milestones. Students will also complete an Individual Development Plan (IDP). In both Spring and Fall, faculty will make recommendations about student expectations and progress.
Student Expectations
To ensure satisfactory progress in the HSRP program, students must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA average in the program; must have an advisor; maintain progress toward a degree; and provide self-assessment of their progress, which will be reviewed annually by the student’s advisor and program faculty. Students, as well as faculty, will initiate and maintain regular contact with their academic advisor(s) to review progress toward the completion of their degree. The following is an example of preferred timelines for HSRP milestones.
Milestone | Timeline – No MS | Timeline – With MS |
---|---|---|
MS thesis defense | End of Year 2 | N/A |
Submit MS thesis manuscript(s) | End of Year 3 | N/A |
PhD coursework completed | End of Year 3 | End of Year 2.5-3 |
Written preliminary exam | End of Year 3.5 | End of Year 2.5-3 |
Oral preliminary exam | End of Year 4 | 1 semester after written prelim exam completion |
Defense of dissertation | End of Year 5 | End of Year 4 |
(One year constitutes 12 months or Fall/Spring/Summer)
Students are also expected to attend student orientations and the HSRP colloquium; follow University, Graduate School, and Graduate Program rules and procedures for completion of degree requirements; keep up to date with announcements that may involve changes in the University, Graduate School, or Program rules and procedures for completion of degree requirements. Students are responsible for reading and understanding these announcements, and following University rules for conducting research, including training that is associated with treatment of human subjects and other components regarding responsible conduct of research.
Academic Advisor Expectations
The academic advisor’s responsibility is to monitor and facilitate the student’s progress. The advisor will regularly communicate with the graduate student. Advisors will act as a contact person for students and help direct them to the appropriate resources in the program given whatever issues or problems the students may have; act as a resource for students when bureaucratic or political problems in the university, Graduate School, or program may be interfering with the student’s effective progress toward his or her degree; ensure that students have a project that meets standards of performance in the program and that the project is moving toward completion in a timely fashion; ensure that students are prepared for taking preliminary examinations; attend graduate faculty meetings and understand the information distributed at the meetings; follow university, Graduate School, and program rules and procedures for completion of degree requirements; keep up-to-date with announcements from the Program’s DGS and Administrative Specialist; maintain regular contact with the student to review progress towards the degree, including timely completion of coursework and grades. Contact the Director of Graduate Studies in cases where students are not receiving reasonable assistance from their academic advisor(s).
