BS Pharmacology and Toxicology Prerequisite Course Requirements

– For UW–Madison Students

Intro Biology: Zoology 151-152 (Introductory Biology I and II); OR Zoology 101 (Animal Biology) AND Zoology 102 (Animal Biology Lab) AND Botany 130 (General Botany); OR Biocore 381-382 (Evolution, Ecology & Genetics with lab) and Biocore 383-384 (Cellular Biology with lab).
Chemistry Chemistry 103-104 (General Chemistry I and II) or 109 (Advanced General Chemistry) or 115 (Chemical Principles I); AND 343-344-345 (Introductory Organic Chemistry – Introductory Organic Chemistry Lab – Intermediate Organic Chemistry).
Math: Math 221 (Calculus & Analytic Geometry) OR 171-217 (Calculus with Algebra and Trigonometry I & II). Math 211 (Calculus for pre-business students) does NOT fulfill this math requirement.
English / Communication: The UW-Madison Communication “A” requirement must be fulfilled.
Social Science: 3 credits – Any course designated as social science. (A variety of AP scores may fulfill this prerequisite).
World Language: 2 years of one world language in high school, or 2 semesters of one world language in college, or 1 year of one world language in high school plus the second semester of the same world language in college.
Other Courses: To bring total degree credits to 60 credits.

There are additional courses that are required for graduation (not for admission). Students are encouraged to work ahead on these requirements if space permits. The following additional courses are required for graduation and may be options for your first year:

  • Ethnic Studies – 3 credits
  • Humanities – 6 credits – Any course that qualifies as humanities, literature, or as a world language.

  • An ethnic studies course may also fulfill the communication, social science, or humanities requirement if it qualifies as such.
  • Admission to the PharmTox major is for the fall semester only; admission is not granted for the spring or summer session.
