To be eligible to use University Health Services (UHS) you must be currently enrolled at UW-Madison and carry a valid Student ID Card. Students who don’t enroll in summer session and wish to receive services at UHS will be charged a fee-for-service. Further summer eligibility guidelines are available at www.uhs.wisc.edu.
Services available are, for the most part, prepaid as part of the segregated health fee included with your tuition or by other university funds. Additional charges are required for some services, such as physical therapy and massage therapy. University Health Services does not cover the cost of services provided outside of its facilities. It is strongly recommended that all students have health insurance with coverage for emergency room care and hospitalization.
To address the needs of students who are uninsured and underinsured, UW–Madison has developed a university-sponsored, comprehensive and affordable Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). The plan is designed to complement UHS services and, in combination with these services, provide major medical insurance coverage 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for students and their dependents. Coverage under SHIP is mandatory for all international students in the U.S. on any type of non-immigrant visa (such as F-1, J-1, H-1, etc.) and their dependents living in this country, unless they can provide evidence of continuous enrollment in a comparable health insurance plan. Coverage is also available on a voluntary basis for all graduate students registered for at least two credits, undergraduates, or special students taking at least five credits, and dependents of the above groups. Out-of-area coverage is also available for students in clerkships. Enroll online at https://www.uhs.wisc.edu/ship/. For information on premiums, coverage and enrollment, contact the SHIP office within University Health Services, 265-5232, or by email at shipmail@uhs.wisc.edu.
